The Kehl II biomass CHP plant generates electricity and supplies the turbine exhaust steam as process steam to a neighbouring paper mill.

Challenge
At the Rhine port in Kehl, a combined heat and power plant was to use waste wood of categories A I and A II as well as fresh wood and supply a paper mill with steam.
Solution
The fuel is tipped at enclosed truck unloading points, freed of oversized pieces and ferrous and non-ferrous metals, and stored in two silos of around 3,000 m³ each. A reciprocating grate firing supplies the boiler with 23 t/h of live steam at 78 bar and 470 °C. The flue gases are cleaned by dry sorption with hydrated lime and hearth furnace coke.
Result
Since March 2011, the plant has generated just under 3 MW of electricity; the back-pressure steam at 7.5 bar goes to the paper mill. The boiler efficiency is 89%.
