An ORC CHP plant generates electricity, district heating and heat for drying in a pellet plant from untreated forest wood chips.
Thermal input, reciprocating grate
Thermal oil output
Electrical output ORC (net)
Challenge
Forest wood chips and landscape maintenance material were to be turned into electricity for the grid, district heating for Aschaffenburg and heat for particle drying in a pellet plant.
Solution
A reciprocating grate with a thermal input of 11.75 MW heats a three-pass thermal oil heater with two economisers. The thermal oil at 315 °C drives an ORC module; the combustion air is preheated to 120 °C via a flue gas/air heat exchanger. A multicyclone and an electrostatic precipitator clean the flue gases.
Result
Since the end of 2010, the ORC module has generated 1.775 MW of electricity (net) and 7.85 MW of hot water. In heat-led operation, the plant achieves an overall efficiency of more than 84%.
